With Hispanic Heritage Month at its peak, what better way to spend the remaining days of this month-long celebration than by watching some of the best Spanish TV series in the past few years? Honestly, what’s so good about Spanish content is there’s something for everyone — horror, romance, comedy, action, medical – name it, and you’ll find one that will likely be your new favorite. It’s a struggle to find the next TV series to binge-watch, we all know that, especially if the last show you watched set the bar high.
We’ve spent several weeks finding some of the best TV series you can watch this month, and we’re excited to share with you our personal picks. You’ll find most of these shows on popular streaming platforms and Latino TV packages.
- Vis a Vis (5 Seasons, 45 episodes)
Vis a Vis, or Locked Up in English, is a Spanish drama about a young woman named Macarena Ferreiro who finds herself in a difficult spot after getting caught up in a scheme orchestrated by her boss, whom she was dating. Unfortunately, she ends up in Cruz del Sur, a women’s prison where she has to face challenges beyond her wildest imagination
Living behind bars is surely not easy, but her prison life was brutal. Macarena has to adapt to survive, especially since she’s with tough inmates who have their own agendas and corrupt prison guards. Prison politics isn’t helping her case as well.
- Elite (8 seasons, 64 episodes)
If you’re into teen drama, you cannot miss Elite. You’ve probably even heard of this or watched a few episodes of it already. It’s all about the lives of rich students at an exclusive private school in Spain. Everything changed when three working-class teens earned scholarships to attend this so-called elite school. This is where they discover that this highly-regarded educational institution isn’t as glamorous as it seems.
There’s also this mystery due to the murder that happened at the school, which will keep you guessing who the killer might be. Everyone’s a suspect, which makes it extremely hooking. It is probably one of the best Spanish TV series out there, so don’t sleep on it. You’ll likely enjoy it as much as we did.
- Respira (1 season, 8 episodes)
Respira is the first medical Spanish TV series we’ve ever watched, and it did not disappoint. It’s about the dedicated medical staff at Joaquín Sorolla Hospital, where Biel and a team of medical professionals work hard every day to save their patients’ lives, even with a struggling public healthcare system.
The best part about this series is that it shows the pressure healthcare workers face on a daily basis. Biel and his colleagues are all about putting their patients first, but things get complicated when they have to decide between fighting for better working conditions for themselves or focusing entirely on the health of their patients.
- Berlin (1 season, 8 episodes)
If you’ve watched Money Heist, then you’ll surely enjoy Berlin as it is a spin-off series about, well, Berlin. We will see Berlin in his world as he plans and executes daring robberies across Europe. Each episode shows his smart strategies and the relationships he builds with his team. We all know that in La Casa de Papel, it was all about the team’s characters, what made them who they were, and their relationships with each other.
Berlin isn’t entirely different. We get to know Berlin in a deeper level — deeper than what we’ve seen in Money Heist. Right now, it’s only available on Netflix, but there might be some streaming deals in the future that would cover this great show.
- Queen of the South (5 seasons, 62 episodes)
If you want intense action drama, Queen of the South will not fail you. This TV series is about Teresa Mendoza, a woman who’s just simply living a simple life in Mexico and then becomes one of the most powerful drug lords in the world. Yes, world. After her boyfriend, who worked for a drug cartel, is murdered, Teresa is forced to run for her life. Along the way, she ended up in the world of drug trafficking, where she learned how to outsmart her enemies, earn trusted friends, and fight her way to the top.
- Merlí (3 seasons, 40 episodes)
Merlí is a Spanish about a high school philosophy teacher named Merlí. He teaches in a fun and different way that helps his students think about life in new ways. He also encourages them to ask questions and have deep conversations, which helps them with their own personal problems. The show also shows Merlí’s own challenges with his family and life. It’s a touching and interesting series about how one teacher can change the lives of his students.
Final Thoughts
There are a lot of Spanish TV series that are worth watching out there. We would’ve included all the shows we loved over the years, but that’s probably for another blog post. One thing we can guarantee though is that you will love at least two shows we’ve listed here. We hope you enjoy watching these TV series!
