Unless you’re about to buy a new home or property, you probably don’t really think much about architecture. Maybe if you’re in the presence of a skyscraper you’re seeing for the first time, then you’ll likely think, “Oh, this building is really tall!” then go on about your day. But architecture, at its heart, isn’t just about tall, impressive buildings. It’s about carving a space out of nature’s landscape and creating a place that can be a haven for people, with a few extra conveniences. An architect’s vision can extend from the ideal Segar View Condominium to towering structures that serve as testaments to the wonders of modern construction.
In Malaysia, there are a number of architects who are making it their mission to not only alter the country’s skyline with their projects, but to also make a real and lasting impact with their works. Here are some of the names that you should become familiar with:
Serina Hijjas
Serina Hijjas is a second-generation architectural talent who serves as a champion of sustainable design in Malaysia. The daughter of renowned Hijjas Kasturi, she worked with her father on the design of Menara Telekom, the country’s first energy-efficient high-rise. Their work was nominated for an Aga Khan award, which paved the way for other high-profile projects like the headquarters of the Securities Commission and the main office of Shell Malaysia. Her firm is responsible for the masterplan of TNB Nucleus City, which aligns with Malaysia’s 2050 net-zero goals by emphasising smart mobility, clean energy, and IoT infrastructure.
Shin Tseng
Shin Tseng developed a love for old structures while growing up amidst Melaka’s heritage buildings. After earning a master’s degree from London’s Bartlett School of Architecture, he developed his skills in adaptive re-use, urban planning, mixed-use development, and hospitality, then returned to Malaysia with an eye towards revitalising old buildings. Some of his achievements include the redevelopment of Semua House and The Five in Damansara Heights, as well as the transformation of a historic cinema into an arts and culture hub.
Lillian Tay
Lillian Tay is a Princeton graduate who has designed several award-winning buildings and landmarks in Malaysia. Her long list of notable work includes the Oxley Towers (which is the tallest building in the country designed by a Malaysian), the W Hotel, DiGi Headquarters, and Star Residences. She also played a key part in the design of Malaysia’s earliest sustainable buildings such as Menara Binjai, One Sentral Tower, and Putrajaya Western Transport Terminal. In 2023, she became the first woman in the history of the Malaysian Institute of Architects to be awarded the PAM Gold Medal.
Hud Bakar
Hud Bakar, in his decades of architectural experience, has helped shape the skyline of modern Malaysia like no other. Some of his remarkable achievements include the MITEC exhibition centre, the MACC building, the Jakim building, and the iconic Naza and Tabung Haji twin towers. He was also involved in the construction of the Merdeka 118, the second-tallest structure in the world, just behind the Burj Khalifa.
If Malaysia is included in your travel plans, make sure to include visits to its most iconic buildings in your itinerary. It’s one way to pay tribute to the brilliant architects who designed them.
